Nooo!

I was minding my own business thinking about getting home in time to watch the Rifleman when a car turned a corner in such a wide turn that it tore up the whole side of my beautiful new car!  With the help of a gentleman walking his dog we were eventually able to get the door opened so I could remove myself.  About the same time I got out of my car the sweet lady who ran into my red hot vehicle came out of her car apologizing over and over.  I actually felt worse for her than I did for myself!   I had just left Aunt Amy's house and I called her right away.  I have to be honest I was in a little bit of  a stupor and having her come and take care of all the details was wonderful.  The police came, had us show all of our documentation of car ownership and insurance which fortunately we both had.  After that I was able to call my insurance company and I'm now waiting for what comes next.  My trip to Utah has been put on hold which makes me sad but as soon as all the details are worked out I hope to be on the road heading north.  Tomorrow I'm going to Safeway to buy some flowers and then I'm going to take them to the lady who made a mistake and make sure she is okay.  I think she needs a friend!

Happy Birthday Grandad!

He would have been 98 Years old today

Time to get ready for Valentine's Day!  I just can't help myself and now I have a wonderful neighbor that loves decorating as well--so we are having a great time fixing up the digs.

Saturday Trip

I started listening to a book on tape this week.  It's a mystery about a man who owns the museum at the base of the Superstition Mountains.  I realized that I have often seen the mountains off in a distance but have never gone to the actual area.  So yesterday I got in the car and drove east to Apache Junction and then headed north to the base of the mountain.  I didn't get as close as I had hoped but plan to go again.

I guess this is a good time to tell you that I am not a hiker.  And I am definitely not a mountain climber.  This realization came to me when I was a teenager and our leaders decided to take us on a hike into the mountains.  May I just say (I WAS skinny then!) that hiking up was sooo hard and when I reached the top I was euphoric with joy that the nightmare was behind me.  But no.  I thought going back down would be a piece of cake and it didn't take but a few minutes to realize that I was only half way through the agony of the hike.  Who would have thought that going back down would be as miserable as going up.  I find it interesting that even in my golden years going up and down stairs is enough of a mountain experience for me and I hate both directions!

Back to the mountain.  It is actually really beautiful and with all the rain we've had this years the whole area was just green and lush.  Hiking trails were everywhere and there were a lot of people taking advantage of them.  The mountains have quite a history.  Some Apaches were said to believe that the Superstition mountains was where the hole leading down to hell was located.  If you've ever watched any western movies about Arizona you probably heard of the lost Dutchman's gold mine.  Supposedly, on his death bed, Jacob Waltz told his landlady that he found a mother lode of gold in the Superstition mountains and since that time people have continued to try to find it.  I'm sure that the Apaches that had to hike the mountain were justified in their belief.  I suspect the lost Dutchman lost his mind after his hike on the mountain and so the only gold he probably ever experienced was some that they suggested he had stolen from the Vulture Mine that he worked at.

I have to say the only thing that looked expensive in the area were some of the homes built at the base of the mountains.  I was never meant to be a person who lived out in the "boonies" so those fancy houses didn't have much appeal to me!

Everyone Survived!

The California Duncan's experienced a heart attack!  Fortunately, everyone survived with smiles on their faces.
I love those people who go out of their way to tell others they are loved and appreciated.  Someone did just that to Ava and others in her family.  What a treat to get out of the car and head to the front door and then to be confronted with a window full of hearts.  It's heartwarming!

La France Vous Appelle!

France was calling and Lexy and Ellis have answered the call!  They applied for an internship for the summer in France and found out last week that they were accepted in the program.  They will be going to Paris in June.  Not a bad place to spend a honeymoon.  They won't know their specific assignment until they get the official placement in the organization they will be working with.  This summer with all the things that are happening in our family we are going to have some awesome posts!  Keep the pictures coming!  Congratulations Lexy and Ellis.

They're Back!!

The birds are starting to find their way back to some warmer temperatures and I love that I live close to this pond where the egrets like to congregate.  I used my new phone to get some pictures and wanted to share them with all of you.  For all of our northern friends--thank you!  Don't worry they will be back.  If you click on the individual pictures you will be able to see the birds better.

Just a Thought

I have been listening to an audio book about President Eyring and the last chapter of the book was about
his wife.  She has dementia now and as I listened to his thoughts about her it was bittersweet.  Before her illness she often spoke along with him at conferences and at other occasions.  I loved a particular story she shared in a talk she gave.   Sister Eyring told the experience of a mother who had hired a babysitter to come and watch her children because she had a meeting to attend in the evening.  She told the babysitter that each night before the children went to bed she would read them several stories and then sing them a song before she turned off the light.  When she returned home that evening the babysitter told her that she didn't need to read to the kids because she just put them to bed and told them to go to sleep as she turned off the light.  She chastised the mother that she was doing way to much each evening and just needed to do what the babysitter had done.  Without reply she thought to herself, "I don't want to put them to sleep, I want to love them to sleep."  This story also brought back some sweet memories I had of Grandpa.  He was always the reader and I still remember listening to him read to each of you when you were little.  I know you loved having him read but in all actuality he loved reading to you even more.  Often when we traveled together later in life and before we had a CD player in the car he would read a book to me when I was driving to pass the time.  In my experience of being around each of your families I have seen that picture play out as well.  It is a sweet reminder of what is truly important.
