Did You Know?
Your great great grandfather William James Hickey was a fire captain in Phoenix, Arizona. His father had died from tuberculosis before he was born. They were getting ready to move from Missouri to Arizona because of his illness but when he went to tell his parents goodbye he passed away. Grandpa Hickey's mother ended up moving to Arizona with him and his sister and brother. At that time she had married John Kohl. When my grandfather was a young man he was chopping wood. A wood chip flew into his left eye and from that time on he wore a glass eye. He became a firefighter in spite of that (although he wasn't able to drive the firetruck). In November 1953 he retired after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and three months later he passed away. In most pictures I have of him his hair or a hat covered his glass eye.
